SAVONA, THE CHARM OF HISTORY

Savona is a fascinating, port city, rich in history, whose architectural and artistic events are linked to the history of the wealthy Della Rovere family (two members of which even became popes).

The mediaeval centre is the main tourist attraction.

Not far from the port is the Priamar fortress, dating back to the 16th century, and a series of towers that cannot be missed in an ancient sea fortress, such as the ‘Torretta’ also known as the Leon Pancaldo Tower, the Brandale Tower, in the heart of the old town, the Corsi Tower, the Guarnero, and the Pancalda Tower.

Mention should also be made of the richness of the churches, including the Sistine Chapel, named after Pope Sixtus and the only one to bear the same name as the most famous one in Rome, and the Cathedral of the Assumption.

Among ancient churches, historical palaces and works such as the Palazzo delle Piane, a masterpiece of the Italian Art Nouveau style, the tourist is sure to be satisfied. But Savona is also a modern city with a good selection of shops, restaurants and bars.
